The Divine Christ

Many modern Christians question and some have rejected the orthodox notion that Jesus the Messiah was divine. Based on popular authors, many of these reckon that the deity of Christ is a doctrine that was created centuries after Jesus lived and died. In this course we’ll demonstrate that Paul, the earliest writing Christian theologian, wrote his letters explicitly claiming Christ’s deity just decades after Jesus’ crucifixion. He did so chiefly, though not exclusively, by the ways in which he reread his Bible, the Old Testament. This conviction was not exclusive to Paul; it was also shared with other early Christian authors. Thus, we’ll also consider how Matthew used the Old Testament with a view to Christ’s divinity.

Jewish and Greco-Roman Backgrounds of the New Testament

In this course, Dr. Matthew Halsted gives you a first-class ticket from the twenty-first century to the era of Jesus and the first Christians as he introduces you to the historical, theological, and social environment surrounding the New Testament period, the late second temple period (516 B.C. – A.D. 70). Dr. Halsted puts you in the front seat as he focuses your attention on the history of the second temple period and the theological and social developments within the Greco-Roman world. As he places the New Testament and early Christianity in its original context, you’ll gain a solid foundation for understanding and interpreting the New Testament.

The Doctrine of Salvation

Approaching the doctrine of salvation through the lens of a divine council worldview will be a unique experience for everyone taking this course. Dr. Ronn Johnson will begin our study by carefully explaining the cosmology of the biblical world, noting how the ancient reader would have understood the relationships of God, rebellious spirits, and human beings. We will then move through the biblical story itself, identifying how familiar terms such as faith, idolatry, righteousness, judgment, and resurrection find expression in the narrative of human salvation. Along the way, we will explore the many Old Testament and New Testament examples of individuals becoming right with God. Our course will conclude by celebrating the ministry of Jesus Christ, the “pioneer and perfecter” (Hebrews 12:2) of our Christian faith, and answer the question still being asked by so many today: "What must I do to be saved?"

Contemporary Post-Modern Apologetics 201 (Old Testament)

Thinking well about Scripture also means being able to answer the hard questions posed in the culture and church today. In this course, Dr. Heiser focuses on Old Testament controversies that in today’s conversation provoke criticism of the Bible as a reliable source of spiritual, theological, and historical truth. The goal is to expose how scholarly discussions, as well as amateur discussions (those in the media or online environments), misrepresent these biblical controversial topics.

Contemporary Post-Modern Apologetics 202

Thinking well about Scripture also means being able to answer the hard questions posed in the culture and church today. In this course, Dr. Bass focuses on New Testament controversies that in today’s conversation provoke criticism of the Bible as a reliable source of spiritual, theological, and historical truth. The goal is to expose how scholarly discussions, as well as amateur discussions (those in the media or online environments), misrepresent these biblical controversial topics.

History of the Bible

In this course, Dr. Heiser surveys how the Scriptures came to be, from the original composition to canonical recognition, to transmission of ancient manuscripts, to English translations. He discusses how the roles of archaeology, paleography, and textual criticism contribute to this understanding, and he outlines controversies arising from the intersection of theology (revelation, inspiration, inerrancy) and the evidence yielded by the data.

Questions Aloud: Introduction to Basic Apologetics

Have questions about defending the Christian faith? Dr. Heiser has answers. Sharing God’s Word as the Truth and solution for today’s problems is necessary for all Christ followers. In this course, we get answers to your most frequently asked questions about the so-called “problems” with the Bible. It’s designed to introduce you to defending the Old and New Testaments and prepare you for Contemporary Post-Modern Apologetics 201 (Old Testament) and Contemporary Post-Modern Apologetics 202 (New Testament).

Questions Aloud: Introduction to the Unseen Realm

The Apocalypse of Jesus Christ

The Apocalypse of Jesus Christ, or the Book of Revelation, has been called “a hallucinogenic nightmare,” “a masterpiece of pure art,” and “the Climax of Prophecy.” This last book of the Bible is the climax of all that went before: the Law, the Psalms, the Prophets, the Gospels, and the Epistles. It is a fitting conclusion to the Holy Library that began with the creation story in Genesis 1-2 and ends with the New Heavens and New Earth in Revelation 21-22. In this course, we will take a heavenly journey with the Apostle John through an “open door in heaven” and behold Heaven’s throne room, worship the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, witness the great tribulation, the rise of the antichrist, the suffering and martyrdom of followers of Jesus. But when all hope seems lost, we will witness the victorious return of Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords, to defeat all evil, His 1,000-year reign, the final Judgment, and the New Heavens and the New Earth.

The Attributes of God

Knowing who he is and his being is essential for a deep, intimate relationship with the God of creation. You may use words like love, holy, just, and good to describe him. It’s through these attributes that God reveals himself and we discover who he really is. Throughout Scripture, different attributes are displayed at different times. In this course, Dr. Heiser outlines the nature of God by explaining the unshared attributes that God alone possesses as well as the attributes he shares with humanity, created as his image. He lays out the arguments for God’s existence and you’ll walk away with a solid foundation for the doctrine of God.

The Dead Sea Scrolls and the New Testament

There has been much scholarly investigation into the historical and cultural events which shaped Second Temple Judaism – namely, the world in which Jesus lived and in which the New Testament was written. The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Qumran community depict elements of Judaism that existed before the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. which aid in understanding the Second Temple period. In this course, Dr. Dominick S. Hernández engages in a fascinating conversation with Dr. Craig A. Evans, leading New Testament scholar and authority on the Dead Sea Scrolls, to examine the writings, doctrines, and practices of the Qumran community as portrayed in the Dead Sea Scrolls in an attempt to conceptualize the Jewish world into which Jesus came. Together, they survey the cultural, theological, and historical relationships between the Qumran community and the Dead Sea Scrolls with the New Testament.

Two Powers in Judaism in Second Temple Texts

In this course, Dr. Heiser outlines the various figures and concepts behind the theology of two Yahweh figures in ancient Judaism. This ancient conception of a Godhead forms the backdrop for various New Testament passages. The course builds on Unseen Realm 101’s introduction to the two powers in the Hebrew Bible.

Unseen Realm 101

This course is the first of a two-course series that is based on Dr. Heiser’s book, The Unseen Realm: Recovering the Supernatural Worldview of the Bible. Starting with the Old Testament, Dr. Heiser takes a behind-the-scenes look at Chapters 1 through 22 to uncover what the Bible really says about the supernatural unseen world. You’ll journey into the ancient world of the Old Testament to learn about the historical and cultural milieu of the Bible’s original authors and audiences.

Unseen Realm 102

In this course, Dr. Heiser builds on the meta-narrative and supernatural concepts developed in Unseen Realm 101. He covers Chapters 22 through 42 of his book, The Unseen Realm: Recovering the Supernatural Worldview of the Bible, and transitions into the New Testament. He picks up the supernatural plotline of the Bible and culminates in God establishing his natural and supernatural family in the book of Revelation.

What is the Gospel?

Often those who start with Paul's gospel have a hard time fitting in Jesus' gospel, while those who start with Jesus' gospel have a hard time fitting in Paul's gospel. In this course, Dr. Phelps outlines the differences between Paul's gospel and Jesus' gospel and helps you understand the true context and connection between the two. He takes you on a journey, starting in Genesis and ending in Revelation, to develop the framing story and a kingdom which provides the foundational principle for answering the question, "What is the gospel?"
